Photo Day: Naha Tug of War | Okinawa, Japan
13 Oct
I have lived here on Okinawa for over two years and for some reason my wife and I miss out on the chance to see one of the great events on the island. The Great Tug of War challenge is held annually in Naha, Okinawa and draws in thousands of spectators to Kumoji crossing.
Fortunately, my wife and I had the opportunity this year to take part in the 38th annual Tug of War challenge.
The rope itself consist of two 300-foot sections weighing 44 tons. The two sections become joined by a massive 10-foot wooden peg making it a Guinness World Record.

You can find all of the pictures taken throughout the day by checking out my Okinawa Photos section and selecting the Naha Tug of War album.

Great Photos, I saw some from the Pics ash sent me. Looks like it was a lot of fun. By the way Ash has her blog up and running now, maybe you can add it to your Blogroll so she can get some traffic. Take care man.
Man that shit is awesome. Did you take those pics yourself. If so they’re real good. but that is some insane shit man. Peace Bro
Jay,
Great pics. I was wondering how they got both of the ropes into the street? I don’t think that they tied them on the spot. It would have taken too long.
Did they drag them in or bring them on a big flat bed trailer?
Dad,
They actually have people pull the two ends together at the beginning of the “tug” and join them by the huge wooden peg. I am pretty sure that they haul them in on a flat bed earlier in the day.
I am trying to remember if I saw you out there….I was right up on the rope also. By the way, I will be closing HDR Japan and am moving everything over to johnburgreen.com if you could update your sidebar link please.
John,
Thanks for updating me about HDR Japan. I really enjoy all of your work. Why the move from HDR Japan to johnburgreen.com??
