Charlie’s Tacos Okinawa, Japan
30 May
One of my favorite local taco restaurants on island is Charlie’s Tacos. Today I decided that I would stop by and have some tacos before I leave and really regret not getting my Okinawan taco fix.
Charlie’s Tacos has some really great tasting food. You will probably pay a little more than what you are use to for a taco, but I am sure you will appreciate their unique style.
Charlie’s Tacos is a very popular spot and that is evident as soon as you walk through the door. Every time I have been there the place is just packed.
I generally stick with and suggest getting their two tacos and taco rice set for ¥980. One of my favorite things about this set is their taco rice. They give you the option of ordering it regular or spicy. I promise you that their spicy taco rice is definitely out of this world because every time I go there I inhale it!
Charlie’s Tacos isn’t a new place to grab a great tasting taco in Okinawa. You will notice everywhere that Charlie’s has been providing great service and amazing taco since 1956. If you don’t trust me, have a look at their walls. They are covered with satisfied customers throughout the years.
I always go to the Charlie’s Tacos right outside of Kadena Air Base gate 2. But, if you are in Naha on Kokusai street, make sure you check out their second location.
The bottom line is that I have really enjoyed going to Charlie’s Tacos for the past three years. If you have a chance, check it out!

So its Mexican you want? You’re not gonna find the good stuff in Japan. You should come over to Texas for the best Mexican in the Country.
Don’t forget the CoCo’s I miss that so much…
Tom,
Texas is definitely not Japan!!
Chris,
If you love Cocos so much, just drop like 1500 for a plane ticket so you can get some CoCos and fly back immediately after. I am trying to get my last second food fixes in before we leave Okinawa.
For what’s it worth… I’m still down for buying CoCo’s for Chris and dumping it on the ground in front of him.
But anyways, I owe my knowledge of Charlie’s Tacos to you, Jason. It’s one of my favorite taco (Japanese anyways) places now.
BTW.. nice shot on that last picture.
emm. bookmarked..
I was stationed at Kadena from 1977-1982. I ate at Charlies many times. I hope my poster on the number of taco’s and hot sauces ate is still posted. 376 FMS
Dan,
They still have tons of stuff posted on the walls. Your poster is probably still there with your claim to fame!! I could really go for some Charlies right about now!
That would be so sweet!! Back in the late 70′s and early 80′s that was the place to go. Or a Kobe Beef dinner. Gosh I think we ate something like 100 taco’s and 50 things of sauce and lots of beer. Hey thanks for shouting back. Do you remember the band Murasaki? They were great.
Some of my best memories of “THE ROCK” are of Charlie’s Tacos. It is nice to know some things never change.
Came across my stash of (now old) Okinawa matchbooks. Yep, got a Charlie’s Tacos one right here:

Hoping someday to get back there…
Mike,
I left Okinawa about a year ago and have been thinking about ways to get back there. How long ago was it you were in Okinawa?
nice article about kuliner..
thanks.
I ate there my second day on “The Rock” in ’84, guessing they are not still serving dog meat
I loved this place. I think about the taco’s anytime I am craving a taco. Who would have thought that you would go to Okinawa and find one of the best tasting Taco’s.
I miss Okinawa!!!
I was stationed at Kadena from 1979 – 1981. I ate at Charlie’s Tacos about a million times. It was always awesome. I think my personal record was 22 tacos at one sitting. I would love to go back just for the chance to try and eat another 22.
I ate in the old place on Gate 2 street.I remember when he move to BC 1976.This resturant sold taco at about a 25 cent each then. The street was also differnt.I was airforce and live there from 1974 to 1976.Man was it different then.Yen was 360 to a dollar.
Charlie’s Tacos are the best, Texas is the rest..
Oh… the memories of Charlies Tacos. My wife and I ate there many times in the early to mid-70s. I can’t believe it is still open. No one I tell about it can believe a hole-in-the-wall in Okinawa has the best tacos in the world.
I was a Marine stationed at Kadena Air Force Base 1968-69 and 71-73 assigned to AFRTS AM 650 ( we also had TV and FM all 24/7). I was great duty, Marine on an Air Force Base and working in an Army Field Grade housing area, Rycom Plaza. My “Clock Watcher” program ran Monday-Friday 6 to 8 am, getting everyone off to work or school.
Ate at Charlie’s many times when it was literally a hole in the wall. It was great, considering the fact I was in the East China Sea. That is saying something from a
“Beaner” from deep south Texas. Good luck Charlie’s from you muncher admirer “Gunny” Jose Miguel Rodriguez Garcia de Hinojosa y Vela.
My first multiple visits to Charlie’s Taco were back during the Vietnam War while stationed on Okinawa, or simply passing through. This place has always been on BC Street (Now called Park Avenue). Originally it was nothing more that a hole in the wall joint with dirt concrete floors that catered to drunk service members out on liberty. Some of those old pictures and testimonials remain on the walls of the new establishment, although the Taco’s taste the same as always.
This place was great back in the day. 1980 to 1984. They were shut down for serving dog meat. Big reopening around 1987. The food is not as good. All the old posters and pictures are gone. I am on Okinawa now and ate there abaout 2 weeks ago. OK but nothing like it was.
