29 Mar

I was thinking the other day about a new and fresh way to present some of my photos and stumbled across  a very popular photoblog platform called Pixelpost . According to their home page:

Pixelpost is an open-source, standards-compliant, multi-lingual, fully extensible photoblog application for the web. Anyone who has web-space that meets the requirements can download and use Pixelpost for free

I went to the website, downloaded the software and installed in no time. Unfortunately, I did run into a little snag, but I have a really geeky friend that helped me solve my problem in about 20 minutes. The install and configuring was really easy and can be done by anyone with minimal computer knowledge. The great thing is that if you don’t understand something, you can always check out their forums for a wealth of information.

I am currently using the pixelpost template switchy created by Kevin Crafts . I really like this theme a lot because of how simplistic and professional looking it is. I went on the forum and found a couple of great tweaks that really make it my own.

You can check out what I have created by going to jasonkimball.org/photography . Pixelpost really gives me the opportunity to showcase my photography separate from my blog and I really love that. There is only one photo displayed at a time, but visitors still have the opportunity to leave comments.

Here is a screen shot…I think you should check out the real thing!

We took the advice of a great Nike advertising campaign “Just Do It” and this was the end result.

Not sure if this is what Nike had in mind!

Photo Day: Just Wandering

20 Mar

I really needed to get out and shoot as much as possible this past week. I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but I knew I just wanted to be outside with my camera walking around looking for interesting subjects. I tried to be flexible and packed my Nikkor 80-200mm, Tokina 11-16, and the Nikkor 50mm for the trip. I used all three lenses but had the 80-200mm on the camera most of the time.

Here are a couple of the photos I took during my day of wandering.

The weather sucks

14 Mar

Its seems that for the past four weeks it has done nothing but rain here on Okinawa. I have been trying to make it outdoors and take a couple photo’s every chance I get. Unfortunately there haven’t been that many opportunities. Needless to say, my photography obsession has slowed to crawl. I do however have a couple images I can post from the milliseconds I spent outside when the rain let up.

I will definitely have some more photos posted as soon as the weather cooperates!

King Kong Yakiniku “Yakiniku Paradise” | Okinawa, Japan

9 Mar

I finally decided it was time to take my wife to a Yakiniku restaurant here on island. King Kong Food She hasn’t seemed all that interested but I thought it would be something new and fun for us to try out. I have been to several different Yakinikus and figured King Kong Yakiniku (Yakiniku Paradise) would be a great place to start because they are an all-you-can-eat joint! I am everyone can find something they will like.

I have only really gone to King Kong for lunch and their prices are pretty fair for the most part. I think they may have increased the prices in the past couple of months because they now charge ¥1500 for lunch and ¥1800 for dinner. King Kong People The last time I went there I believe it was ¥1100 and ¥1500. I am not sure what exactly on the menu warrants the ¥300 price difference between lunch and dinner because you have exactly the same selections to choose from.  So, I would suggest going for lunch if you want to say some money. For my wife and I to eat dinner, the bill came out to ¥3600. The great thing is that if you don’t want to take YEN out at the ATM, they accept credit cards!

It is exactly what I would expect from an all-you-can-eat style restaurant. They offer plenty of meats, veggies, soft drinks, ice-cream, soba, curry, sushi, and other goodies to choose from. If you enjoy all-you-can-eat style restaurants…then I am sure King Kong will satisfy your needs.

    Eating a Scorpion

    1 Mar

I recently went back to the Crocodile restaurant with some friends and discovered something very interesting on their special "game" menu. The something interesting that I speak of is scorpion.

For about ¥1100 I got the chance to eat a scorpion. No, it wasn’t alive! I believe the chefs may have either deep fried or pan pan fried the scorpion before serving it.

The scorpion arrived somewhat warm no more than 5 minutes after I ordered it. One of my friends had already eaten one before and said that the only way to do it was all at once. Great idea!

It wasn’t all that bad, I  personally think it tasted like eggshells and puss/maggots. Really nice, right? If scorpions aren’t quite your thing, I noticed crickets or "bugs" on the menu right below the scorpion. I will have to save that feast for next time!

If you are in the Chatan area and want to try something fun and exciting, check out Crocodile Seafood and Bar located across from Jusco.

    Here are a couple photo’s.
