Transit Cafe | Okinawa, Japan

26 Jul

Transit Cafe My wife and I have been spending a lot of time down by the Sunabe Seawall recently and decided to try out another place to grab something to eat. This time we had the opportunity to enjoy a great view and good food at the Transit Cafe .

We arrived just after 6 P.M. and decided to sit outside and enjoy the weather. One thing to note is there are not too many choices when it comes to seating, so it can become somewhat crowded with about fifteen people. Immediately we noticed the friendly atmosphere and great drink selection they offer.

My wife ordered a fondue for starters with a mixed fruit smoothie. For dinner she ordered fish and chips and I went with the spaghetti alla pescatora. Spaghetti alla pescatora The dinner menu has a variety of selections ranging from chicken, beef, pork, seafood, salad, pizza, and spaghetti. All the prices were very reasonable considering the portion size. My spaghetti was delicious, however, let me reinforce how amazing their drink menu is. My wife had an amazing looking (and tasting) smoothie that will have us coming back for more. Smoothie

We enjoyed the food and the great view but plan on making a trip back in the future just for a light snack and their impressive drink menu. If you are ever down by the Sunabe Seawall, give the Transit Cafe a taste.

Ono Kau Kau | Okinawa, Japan

    13 Jul

Right outside of Kadena Air Base gate 1 is a great Hawaiian themed restaurant that I really love eating at because of their awesome atmosphere and home cooked style dishes. Ono Kau Kau Ono Kau Kau is generally pretty busy during the lunch hours due to the masses of military trying to get their Hawaiian fix for the day. However, if you go for dinner you will find plenty of seats to enjoy a great meal.

I have a big appetite so I usually go for the 3 choice set which only cost ¥800. I go for my favorites every time and order garlic chicken, teriyaki chicken, and Kalua pork. Ono Kau Kau Food The 3 choice set comes with rice and some really great tasting macaroni on the side. Now, if you can’t stomach 3 choices then grab the 2 choice set for only ¥600.

Some other items you will find at Ono Kau Kau’s are Lau Lau, Lomi Lomi Salmon, Loco Moco, Haupia, and Ahi Poke to name just a few. So, if Hawaiian is what you crave, check out Ono Kau Kau in Mihama for a laid back atmosphere and simple dishes that really taste great.

Yoshihachi Sushi Bar Whenever someone visits, I make sure to take them to Yoshihachi’s to experience an endless amount of menu items.

After entering Yoshihachi’s you will immediately notice pictures of all the famous people that owner Yoshi Maekawa has met throughout his travels. Yoshihachi is a very popular sushi bar around the area, so it very common to see the entire restaurant full of customers on any given day. No worries, the wait is never that long and is always rewarded by a truly great dining experience.

If seafood is not quite your thing, Yoshihachi offers over 200 menu items. Lots of Sushi Almost any customer can find something they will enjoy. My favorites are the Rainbow roll and the Yoshi roll. Their prices are very reasonable and range from ¥250 for a small dish to over ¥1500 for  sets.

    Sunabe Gyros | Okinawa, Japan

    2 Jul

Sunabe Gyros After being here for nearly two years, my wife and I decided to try a place that we have been meaning to check out for quite some time. Right outside of Kadena Air Base gate 1 is a little restaurant named Sunabe Gyros. It is pretty popular spot for lunch because of their amazing gyro sandwiches they serve up.

My wife and I opted for their hottest seller, a beef gryo combo meal. The combo meals include your choice of either a beef or chicken gyro, fries or chips, and a drink. The  gyro sandwichwith is made with warm pita bread, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and their tzatziki sauce. Beef Gryo Meal The tzatziki sauce is a thick Greek style yogurt sauce made with cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, and local sea salt. I was unsure about the sauce at first, but it ended up tasting superb.

Because there were not many patrons, it took less than 5 minutes for us to receive our meals after ordering. As an added bonus, we were able to enjoy our meals and a view of the Sunabe Seawall on their newly renovated rooftop. Each combo meal was more than reasonable at around ¥700.

The only downside is the parking situation down by the seawall. If you have ever been to the seawall then you know how frustrating it can be.

If you are looking for something quick and fun, check out Sunabe Gyros. Get your Gyro and enjoy watching divers, surfers and beautiful sunsets at the Sunabe Seawall.
